| The International Saddle Seat Equitation Association of
Great Britain (ISSEA-GB) held a fund-raising clinic and show
over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend on 29th & 30th May at
Highstead Riding Centre near Herne Bay in Kent. The clinic on the Sunday was well attended with some riders coming as far afield as Suffolk and Hereford. There were 3 styles of riding sessions - saddle seat, hunter and western. The saddle seat is the flamboyant style used by the American Show Horses and it is this style that ISSEA-GB caters for. Hunter refers to the usual English riding style (it is derived from the term "hunt seat") and western is the stock horse style, which had the greatest number of riders forward. The show on the Monday kicked off with the saddle seat riders with their exuberant and high-stepping horses. These horses love to be cheered and whistled on as they perform and to see them step up a notch or two when the spectators get behind them is amazing. Taking "blues" (first place) in all her classes in this discipline was Sam Burton and her native cross mare "Riverdance". The saddle seat equitation class was a qualifier for the British Team selections and 4 new riders gained their tickets - Sam Burton, Elizabeth Watts, Natalie Rodley and Samantha Hullis. Next on offer were the "English" classes - riding horse, ridden hunter, handy pony and best handler. Taking a blue in the riding horse class was Sandra Poole with Robin & Shirley Hepworth's veteran Morgan Horse "Belmonts The Gigolo". Junior handler Stacey Lee took the blue in the Best Handler with her Appaloosa "Wish Granted" The western classes were all affiliated to the Western Equestrian Society and they started at 1pm. The competitors were just getting into the swing of things when we had a low fly-by by the Red Arrows (the horses were not impressed!) and then the heavens opened for a thunderstorm - lets just say the viewing gallery was jam packed at that stage! Taking blues in all the Open classes was Caroline Lockhart and her Morgan Horse stallion, Picture Perfect. John Ayles and his Quarter Horse mare "Shezastar At The Bar" took the blues in the novice classes and Manda King and her Lusitano gelding "Girassol" took the blues in the Green classes (walk/jog). Apparently "Girassol" means sunflower - obviously this sunflower likes the rain and not the sunshine! The weekend was great fun and raised just under £500 towards the British Team Fund - many thanks to Caroline Lockhart for allowing us to host the event at Highstead Riding Centre. Our next events are a one-day training clinic on Sunday 3rd July and a two-day clinic on 1st & 2nd October, which will include the first stage of the selections for the 2006 British Saddle Seat Equitation Team.
